On a ho-hum Friday in Southington, Connecticut, drivers pulled up, swiped their cards, and filled their tanks. But by the time they left Metro Gas, their engines were struggling. Soon, some wouldn’t start at all.

It turns out the gas station pumps dispensed the wrong fuel. Diesel went into gas tanks. Gasoline went into diesel tanks. Within minutes, cars that had been running fine were now headed for costly repairs.

Why the swapping fuel types devastates engines

Diesel engines rely on compression to ignite the fuel, while gasoline engines rely on spark plugs.

Putting gasoline in a diesel engine can destroy fuel injectors and pumps almost immediately. Conversely, diesel in a gasoline engine can clog the fuel system and prevent combustion.

Either mistake often requires a full flush, extensive cleaning, or complete fuel system replacement.

Estimates in Southington ranged from $1,500 to $17,000

Nate Olchanowski realized something was wrong the moment he left the pump. His truck bucked, then died within minutes. Repairs set him back $1,500.

Patrick Garrett fared worse. He fueled his BMW with diesel instead of premium gas. Mechanics told him the only solution was replacing the entire fuel system, quoting $17,000.

The gas station and its fuel delivery company, Forbes Transport, both admitted the mistake

Forbes pledged to cover the repairs. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection confirmed the error, inspected the station, and oversaw cleanup.

They also encouraged anyone who filled up there on November 29 and experienced engine trouble to file a complaint.

Car insurance usually doesn’t cover fuel mix-ups

Unfortunately, this counts as “maintenance error” or an accident outside a covered peril.

Reimbursement typically comes directly from the responsible party. In this case, it’s Forbes Transport.

Drivers should keep receipts, repair estimates, and communication with the gas station or delivery company. Filing a formal complaint with the state can also help speed up reimbursement.
