Colorado man loses truck and thousands after buying stolen vehicle
A Colorado man and his truck had a very short honeymoon period. It turns out that the man accidentally bought a stolen truck and was forced to return it, hours away in Texas.
To make matters worse, police officers found evidence that the pickup truck was involved in a scam to be repeatedly stolen and resold multiple times.
The story begins with a man finding a nice ride through the Facebook Marketplace. He liked it so much that he flew from Houston to check it out in Colorado.
Upon inspecting the pickup truck, the man decided to buy it with cash and drive it back to Texas. According to CBS News, the vehicle seemed legitimate.
Documents included the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N), the title, WIN plates inside the doors, and license plates.

The seller explained that one key fob was lost, which is actually a red flag. Thieves will often keep one of the key fobs so they can steal the same car and sell it multiple times.
When the buyer tried to register the truck, the clear and recorder’s officer contacted detectives. Authorities shared that the title had been washed, or altered to match the truck’s information. The license plates were cloned as well.
Then they found a tracking device hidden on the stolen truck. The thieves knew exactly where to go if they wanted to use the keyfob to steal it again.
Houston officers confirmed that the truck was stolen in November and an insurance company already paid the owner for its loss. Therefore, the insurance company owns it and the Colorado man is out of luck.
