The Chevy Montana could fight the Ford Maverick
A lot of automakers have been jumping on the tiny truck train since the Ford Maverick took off. Rumors suggest that Ram and Toyota both have compact trucks in the works. But what about Chevrolet? The Chevy Montana could attract buyers.
Will the Chevy Montana come to America?
As of a few months ago, Chevrolet has been a Debbie Downer about building a compact truck for America. But things move pretty quickly in the automotive industry, and plans change. For example, many automakers are abandoning their EV plans.
The 2026 Chevy Montana is officially out in Brazil, providing the framework for a Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz competitor. It’s a tiny unibody truck or ute.
It looks like a Chevy Blazer with a truck bed, which makes sense. The Maverick is a Ford Escape with a bed, and Toyota is considering turning the Corolla Cross into a truck.
The Montana uses a 1.2-liter inline-three engine with 141 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. That’s a bit underpowered for Americans. It’s available with a six-speed manual transmission, though.
With the Maverick, the standard hybrid engine provides 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. The available gas-powered engine cranks out 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.
According to GM Authority, the Montana is only available with FWD, which is another issue for Americans. But it has a spacious 30.9 cubic-foot cargo box. The Maverick has a 33.3 cubic-foot cargo box.
Tariffs are creating some tension for automakers. Chevrolet might have to build the Montana in America to keep the pricing low. The Maverick is built in Mexico and has an increasing price as a result.
