While some drivers swear that they’ll never switch to an electric vehicle, others are all charged up about EVs. Automakers like Chevrolet, Ford, Kia, and Tesla have been competing for dominance. Chevy EVs just outsold Ford EVs, and might take Tesla down next.

Chevy EVs outsell Ford and target Tesla

While the future of electric vehicles feels uncertain due to low interest, policy changes, and decreased tax breaks, automakers aren’t giving up.

Chevrolet, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Tesla, Nissan, and more are working to build the best electric trucks, SUVs, and cars to establish dominance.

Tesla used to sit back without any worry because it didn’t have much competition a few years ago. But automakers have had a chance to catch up.

In particular, Chevy EVs are experiencing explosive growth. During the first five months of the year, Chevrolet sold over 37,000 EVs while Ford sold about 34,000 EVs. General Motors sold about 62,000 EVs combined.

However, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, and Chevrolet are under the General Motors umbrella, so that feels like it’s four against one. Anyways, according to Inside EVs, Chevy EVs want to take Tesla down next.

But it has some work to do as Tesla sold roughly 128,100 EVs during the first five months of the year. It’s ahead by about 91,000 models.

Chevy sales have improved by about 14% during the first quarter of 2025 thanks to the Blazer and Equinox EVs. Plus, General Motors EV sales improved by 94% year-over-year. Electric vehicle sales more than doubled compared to last year.

If Chevrolet continues to grow while securing raw materials and navigating the challenges that may come with new tariffs, it could catch Tesla.
