Carjackers in Tennessee Impersonate Cops Using Fake Police Lights in Targeted Attack to Kidnap Driver
Carjackers allegedly kidnapped a Tennessee man on Monday in a targeted attack after pulling him over. The kidnappers allegedly impersonated police using a “dark-colored sedan” with fake police lights inside the vehicle.
The carjacking took place at around 8:25 p.m. in the Windyke neighborhood of Memphis. Shelby County Chief Deputy Anthony Bucker said the victim pulled over when he saw “red and blue lights flashing” and exited his vehicle when the suspects told him to do so.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said on social media that they received a report about the alleged carjacking and kidnapping on Monday night. “Upon arrival, deputies located the victim’s vehicle in the area, driving at a high rate of speed, and initiated a pursuit,” SCSO revealed. During their pursuit of the vehicle, deputies lost sight of it.
Buckner told KFVS News he believes the victim “was attacked and then forced back inside his vehicle, and two, out of what we believe to be three, suspects entered his vehicle and drove him back to his house.”
When they arrived at the victim’s home, the “alarm system went off, spooking them.” The kidnappers then allegedly forced the victim back into his car and left. It was then that officers spotted the vehicle and began pursuing it.

Shortly thereafter, SCSO was notified that the victim had successfully escaped from the kidnappers and contacted 911 from a nearby business.

SCSO wrote on social media that they had found the victim and his vehicle. They also reported, “Detectives are investigating and working to identify and locate the suspects, as well as the vehicle that impersonated a law enforcement vehicle. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
Buckner said it was a targeted attack, and he believes the suspects knew the victim. He also recommended that drivers who may worry about something similar happening to them find a “well-lit area” and/or a “highly populated area” where they “feel comfortable pulling over.”
