A night-long crime spree in Los Angeles reads like something out of a bad action movie. Two men stole four separate vehicles at gunpoint, including a semi truck that they somehow knew how to drive through downtown LA. Then they disappeared.

The excitement started around 10:40 p.m., when police noticed a pickup truck that had been reported hijacked driving on the highway outside of town. When they tried to pull the truck over, a man in the truck began to shoot at police.

The two men in the pickup truck tried to block multiple vehicles, presumably to steal them instead. Then they encountered a white semi truck pulling a tanker trailer — so they stole it.

How did these guys learn to drive a semi truck? Who knows. Why did they think it would make a better getaway vehicle? Beats me. But the long and short of it is they stole the big rig and drove into downtown LA.

During the dramatic chase, a truck driver called the local television station to confirm the truck wasn’t carrying anything hazardous. It wasn’t wearing any of the required placards that hazardous material haulers must have. This caller guessed it might be a milk truck.

The truck-jackers ended up weaving around skyscrapers, then ditching the semi truck. They stole a white pickup truck at gunpoint and took off again. They got far enough ahead of the police that they were actually able to park in Boyle Heights and swap seats. Then the chase was on again. Finally, they stole a black sedan at gunpoint and disappeared into the night.

Before you imagine some smooth criminals, know these hooligans accidentally got on multiple highways driving the wrong way. They also forgot a gun in the first truck they stole. But at least one of them seems to know how to drive a semi truck. Hopefully that shortens the list of suspects — and, combined with all the fingerprints they left — helps police catch them.
