Imagine you’re sound asleep. Then a tremendous “CRASH!” wakes you. Is it a nightmare? Did the cat knock over your plant again? Nope, there’s definitely a car smashed through your bedroom wall. Your brick bedroom wall.

Stolen car veers off Middleton Rd, and into a bedroom

Dylan Moir of Albany, Australia was trying to get some shuteye when disaster struck. “I was just falling, like drifting off into sleep, and just heard like noise, just loud bashing, then I saw lights like headlights come through the window.”

You’d be forgiven for freezing, like a proverbial deer in the headlights. But Moir sprang into action. “I just saw the bricks start coming down and the window falling, I just got up as quick as I could.”

The only problem is, he had nowhere to go. “There had been a car pushed into my room and then all the rubble was blocking the door.”

The car through the wall was one of two parked in Moir’s driveway. It had been pushed by a stolen Holden Commodore that veered off the road and smashed into both cars in his driveway. His first thought: “I was just scared of finding dead bodies in the car.” Instead of getting angry, he cleared the rubble with his bare hands so he could race out to help the crash victims. “There wasn’t anybody in there, they’d run away.”

Police are still searching for the driver of the stolen Holden. But Moir considered himself lucky. “If my car wasn’t there, it would have just come straight through into my room and taken me out, so it saved my life.”

The neighborhood came to Moir’s rescue

Moir wasn’t the only quick thinker in the neighborhood. His neighbor arrived ready to put out the fire. His roommate, Erin Eaton, told the story. “I opened the door, which was jammed shut, so I kind of had to pull that open and was greeted with the car that was smoking and the neighbour was hosing off…Then I kind of walked around in shock…Someone else that was driving down Middleton [Road] called the cops for us which was great.”

Others stepped up to help the shaken roommates. “A neighbour gave us tea and gave us a hug…There was an off-duty nurse around the corner who came around and checked on us.”
