A California woman recently expecting an empty Waymo taxi found a man hiding in the vehicle’s trunk instead. Naturally, because this is 2025, she captured the terrifying encounter and posted it on TikTok.

Police are now looking into how the man ended up inside the trunk of the Waymo. The bizarre incident occurred at MacArthur Park in the Westlake District of Los Angeles.

The woman said she ordered the Waymo taxi for her daughter. When it arrived, she saw the man hiding in the trunk. That’s when she pulled her daughter away and called 911. She can later be heard speaking to a Waymo representative through the car’s audio system.

“Why the f— are you in the trunk?” the woman is heard asking the man in the TikTok video. He responded, “I’m trying to figure this out. This s— won’t let me out.”

“They just put me in it,” the man told the woman. “Who put you in it?” she replied. “The people,” he said.

According to ABC 7 News, the man climbed into the Waymo taxi after a rider left the trunk open at a previous drop-off. In a TikTok video shared by the woman, Los Angeles Police officers are seen detaining the man at the scene.

“You wanted more video. This was real life and not a skit,” the woman wrote in the description to her follow-up video.

The Los Angeles Police Department eventually let the man go, according to Fox LA News. The reason? No crime was actually committed.

Why was he in the trunk? And what did Waymo say about it?

“I just want to know why he was in the trunk. Who put him in the trunk? How did he get into the trunk?” Ollie Shirvani, a Los Angeles resident, said.

“It’s just making me double-check when I open my Waymo — making sure no one else is in the trunk or anywhere else in the vehicle,” another rider said.

When asked to comment about the incident, a Waymo spokesperson told CBS LA News that its rider support team checked in with the rider during and after the incident.

“We’re committed to keeping our riders safe and earning the trust of the communities where we operate. This experience was unacceptable, and we are actively implementing changes to address this,” Waymo said in a
statement.

In the meantime, Waymo also suggested riders double-check any car before getting in and to call 911 immediately if something doesn’t look right.
