California and Massachusetts are battling it out for the worst bragging rights you can imagine. Both states have three cities each in the top ten most dangerous cities for drivers in America. Here are the 10 worst of the 200 cities in the recent study:

  1. Boston, MA
  2. Washington, DC
  3. Baltimore, MD
  4. Worcester, MA
  5. Springfield, MA
  6. Glendale, CA
  7. Los Angeles, CA
  8. Oakland, CA
  9. Providence, RI
  10. Philadelphia, PA

Dangerous cities by the numbers

Allstate’s 2025 America’s Best Drivers Report says Boston tops the list of riskiest places to drive. It ranks dead last at number 200. Springfield and Worcester join Boston to give Massachusetts three of the ten most dangerous cities.

The West Coast doesn’t have much better safety. Glendale, Los Angeles, and Oakland, California, all make the top ten most dangerous cities. Allstate’s data shows Los Angeles drivers file claims at one of the highest rates in the country.

The report says, “Seven of the 10 cities with the highest collision rates are located in the Northeast, including Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. But don’t count out the West Coast: Los Angeles, Glendale and Oakland, California, round out the 10 riskiest cities for drivers.”

What do these numbers mean? Drivers who live there are filing more Allstate Insurance claims per capita than drivers in any other cities. So the average Boston driver files an insurance claim for a crash every 3.07 years. DC drivers come in at 3.87 years, while Baltimore, Maryland is 4.17. What about Los Angeles? Drivers go 5.59 years between claims.

Dangerous cities see rising crash rates

While most cities got safer over the last decade, the most dangerous cities went the other way. The report warns, “Several cities among the 50 most collision-prone cities have seen more than a 25% increase in crash rates since 2015, underscoring a growing divide in road safety.”
