This story serves as a reminder to slow down during winter storms and to be prepared. Have supplies to stay warm, fed, and hydrated in the event of an accident.
Around 10 AM on west I-196 near Zeeland, Michigan, a 100-car pileup brought traffic to a halt. The interstate was closed in both directions for hours, as drivers were stranded.
There were jackknifed semi-trucks with about 30 to 40 big rigs involved. The incident may have been caused by blinding snow squalls. Officials blame semi-trucks for sliding into each other and causing a chain reaction involving over 100 vehicles.
Police officers, firefighters, ambulances, tow companies, and emergency responders immediately rushed to the scene. The multi-vehicle accident stretched across 10 miles.
According to WWMT, there were 40 mph winds, white out conditions, and arctic temperatures plaguing the area. However, only 12 people were injured. They were taken to local hospitals, and there were no fatalities.
Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max tTransit helped stranded motorists get away from the crash site. Police officers shared that most of the accidents were slide offs or minor fender benders.
The interstate finally reopened around 6 PM after eight hours of cleanup operations. Witnesses shared that they were traveling around 25 mph before colliding with others.
They heard the sounds of crushing metal with limited visibility. Officials advised drivers to stay in their cars until the buses arrived due to the ongoing blizzard.
