‘If Toyotas Are So Reliable’ — BMW Lover Films Himself at Junkyard, Criticizes Dependability of JDM Brand
For years, Toyota and its luxury counterpart, Lexus, have consistently topped used car reliability lists. However, TikTok user and auto enthusiast Raphael contests this assertion. In a video that has people wondering if he’s just trolling, or legitimately believes he’s making a good argument, Raphael states his case.
In a clip that’s garnered over 174,000 views, Raphael (@notredlineraphael) claims that “Toyotas are unreliable.” His proof? A junkyard filled with nothing but Toyotas. “If Toyotas are so reliable, why are there only Toyotas behind me?” he asks, showing off what looks like a cemetery of destroyed automobiles from the JDM brand. He then begins pointing them out: “Toyota, Toyota, Toyota, Scion, Lexus. Come on Toyotathon fans — what’s this? I thought they never died? Why are they all here?” he asks, walking through the vehicular wasteland.
“I noticed that there are no N63s in this junkyard. Yet there’s a lot of Toyotas, so. BMW’s more reliable,” he concludes. Following this, he shows off a Toyota with its hood propped up resting on hubcaps. “I thought these ’99 Camrys were supposed to outlive me.”
More Toyota hate…or jokes?
Afterwards, he begins speaking in a tone mocking Toyota fans. “Um, you should get a Lexus instead of a BMW. It’s way more reliable. Uhh, this GS is here,” he says, highlighting a broken down sedan from the luxury auto brand. Then, he shows off an SUV in a similarly demolished state. “Get a Sequoia instead of a Range Rover. These are way better. Well once again, once again, Toyota has lost,” he says, cracking open the truck’s driver’s side door.
“Um you should get a newer Corolla cause it’ll last forever,” he says in the same mocking voice. While doing so, he records footage of what looks like a more recently sold body style. “Well this 2014 Corolla’s here? If this was a Volvo this would’ve never happened,” he says.
Next, his clip transitions to a junked-out Toyota sedan with its entire hood removed from its body. “This Corolla gave up and converted itself into a tuktuk. There are rows and rows of them,” he says, showing off more footage of the Toyota junkyard.
“Even the Tweaker Sienna”
As the video progresses, he shows off a green variant of the legendarily dependable minivan. Stickers adorn its body and the car’s presence in the junkyard “proves” it isn’t as stalwart as some make it out to be. “Even Jesus could not save this Sienna,” he says, pointing out the religious themed messaging on the car.
Raphael continued to show off the wide variety of parted-out Toyota vehicles on the lot. Next up was was looks like a Prius. According to him, the fuel-efficient hybrid’s status as a economy-driven road warrior wasn’t enough to keep it out of the yard. “The CEO of 63 miles an hour in the left lane on the highway that doesn’t move over even made it here.”
The TikToker continued to walk through the wreckage, piling on the Toyota owner hate. His nasal mocking voice makes a comeback, “Yeah bro, I don’t have a car payment. How’d you know?” he says. Then, he happens upon a “third-gen 4Runner.” He closes the open door on the car and says it “didn’t last until the end of time.”
Towards the end of his clip, he shows a Yaris that’s had a large portion of its body removed. “A pebble hit this Yaris.” Afterwards, he says that this footage is undeniable evidence for folks to purchase vehicles from legacy German brands. “This is proof you need to buy a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen. Any of them. Buy Toyota, every car ends up in the junkyard. Reliability is for people that don’t have motion,” he says.
BMW and Mercedes-Benz reliability
Raphael’s TikTok account features a number of videos extolling automobiles from German manufacturers. While he has urged folks to consider buying a new Dodge Hornet due to their low sales numbers, he clearly loves German rides. In fact, his love for German-crafted automobiles is so pronounced, he excitedly penned a TikTok giving insight into Volkswagen’s sausage-selling endeavors.
He also proudly touts his BMW M4 in this clip here. His love for the Bavarian sedan is so pronounced, he even indicates he owns one on a Chevrolet Suburban that he drives around for errands. While Raphael is a proud devotee of beamers and Benzes in his clip, Consumer Reports rankings tell a different story.
BMW ranks #12 in used car reliability according to the independent research group. And for maintenance and repair costs, the auto maker sits a #23 ranking when compared to other automakers. Mercedes-Benz fares slightly better than beamers do, with an #11 dependability ranking in used car purchases. Out-of-pocket repairs may make owners wince as well: as Benz clocked in a #26 standing.
For used rides, Lexus and Toyota are at the top of the pack, as per Consumer Reports’s analytics. So why were there so many Toyotas in the junkyard featured in Raphael’s video? Commenters believe it has to do with the fact he was showing off what was clearly a yard dedicated to wrecked vehicles. Accidents and totaled cars don’t account for dependability.
What’s more is that salvage yards often group vehicles by makes and models. This allows owners to more easily find compatible parts based on customer needs. Presumably, Raphael was at a portion of the junkyard featuring primarily Toyota offerings. It’s not like there aren’t clips of BMWs in junkyards, either.
