BMW just scored a world’s first for corporate applications of crypto. It used the blockchain technology behind cryptocurrency to execute pre-programmed currency exchanges. This could be a game-changer for international companies such as BMW. But don’t hold your breath for the automaker to begin accepting Bitcoin in exchange for new cars.

How did this happen? JPMorgan is working on a system called the Kinexys Digital Payments network. It securely converts currency anytime, day or night, based on the customer’s predefined conditions. For example, when euros are worth less than U.S. dollars, you might choose to sell your euros. For this demonstration, the payment happened after business hours and without human guidance.

BMW sells cars in more than 140 countries. Those vehicles are assembled in its factories across 15 countries, with suppliers in even more nations. So it makes sense that the automaker would jump on new technology like this.

What this means for BMW buyers

So what if you want to buy a BMW with your crypto? That’s up to each dealership. A limited number of luxury dealerships use payment processors such as BitPay to accept crypto as payment.
