The Biggest Truck Flop in History Just Turned 2
Who has the cake and candles? We have a truck birthday to celebrate. Even if it’s the biggest truck flop in history, it has officially been out for two years. It’s a great time to look into what exactly went wrong for this electric vehicle.
The biggest truck flop is the Tesla Cybertruck
While there are plenty of fans of the Tesla Cybertuck, it’s currently considered to be one massive truck flop. Many celebrities and owners have been disappointed by not receiving what Elon Musk promised.
It went from having ‘over a million’ reservations prior to launching in 2024 to only delivering 17,317 units. However, it sold 39,000 models, so what’s with that 42% drop?
According to Morning Star, Musk claimed that the truck would cost between $39,900 – $69,900. Then, when it debuted a few years later than the 2021 deadline, it actually cost between $69,900 to $115,000.
It was also supposed to have up to 500 miles of range, but it only provides up to 340 miles. Plus, it was marketed as an off-roading beast that could be used as a boat. It’s supposed to be apocalypse-proof as Tesla’s ‘Best Ever’ vehicle.
Drivers quickly learned that the truck isn’t up for light snow or off-roading challenges. Also, trying to ford water with it will fry the truck. Gas-powered trucks have rescued many models.
Quality issues also plague the electric vehicle. Metal panels are prone to falling off. It has 10 recalls for things such as exterior lightning, the accelerator pedal getting stuck, and electrical problems. On top of that, the truck has limited spare parts available and a long wait for repairs.
Putting politics and, however you feel about Elon Musk aside, the truck failed to meet expectations. It launched with a higher price tag and less capability than expected, and faces quality issues. I’m surprised when I see Cybertrucks on the road, but I’m also surprised to see the Ford F-150 Lightning.
