Boston police are searching for a 27-year-old Massachusetts man who allegedly attacked a vehicle with a hatchet after a late-night car accident in Brighton.

The chaos unfolded just before midnight Friday on Commonwealth Avenue near Babcock Street. A single car crashed into a tree on the sidewalk. As officers traveled to the scene, 911 dispatchers alerted them that a man was smashing the vehicle with what looked like a hatchet.

Investigators say Andrew Oprian pulled his truck over ahead of the crash site, got out, and walked toward the damaged car. He then started swinging the hatchet, repeatedly striking the windshield and windows. The driver bolted, running down the street as Oprian advanced.

Nearby surveillance video captured a man pacing near the wreck and returning to his truck multiple times while continuing the rampage. After destroying several windows, the suspect left the scene. About 20 minutes later, the shaken victim came back to find the wreckage.

Prosecutors issued a straight warrant out of Brighton District Court charging Oprian with assault with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property. Officers are still trying to locate him, NBC10 Boston shared.

People who live and work along that stretch of Comm. Ave. say they haven’t seen anything like this before. The bizarre outburst has many residents questioning their safety.

Carrying a hatchet in Massachusetts isn’t illegal, but using it to intimidate or attack someone definitely crosses the line into criminal territory. This behavior quickly escalated into a violent felony.

Boston police urge anyone with information about Oprian’s location to call 617-343-4260. You can also leave anonymous tips by calling 1-800-494-TIPS or texting “TIP” to 27463.
