The Golden State of California estimates there are 30,000 to 35,000 black bears in the state. It’s rare for a black bear to break into a car to look for food, but when they do, they can rip it to shreds. One bear can cause hundreds and thousands of dollars worth of damage.

In November, four Los Angeles drivers submitted blurry security camera footage of a bear rummaging through their luxury cars to insurance companies. It destroyed a Rolls Royce and two Mercedes-Benz.

Ruben Tamrazian, Ararat Chirkinian, Vahe Muradkhanyan, and Alfiya Zuckerman’s scheme was so elaborate, that three different insurance companies paid the men over $140,000 for the claims, WFAA reported.

Biologists watched the video and confirmed to investigators that a bear was framed for the actions of the four men. A judge issued a search warrant and investigators discovered the realistic bear suit in the homes of one of the drivers. They also found sharp knives the suit-wearer would attach to their knuckles to tear the interior with.

Authorities grew suspicious when the “claw marks” were incredibly symmetrical and didn’t puncture the leather. But it was the “bear’s” movement that gave it away.

“Whoever was inside the vehicle was not moving like a bear,” Hary Kazakian, an insurance fraud investigator, told the outlet over video. “They were moving like a human. And of course, opening the car door to enter the vehicle is highly suspect and questionable.”

All four have been arrested for insurance fraud and conspiracy.

The viewers were full of jokes

While the men sit in jail, viewers of the outlet’s YouTube video took the opportunity to crack jokes and point out the holes in their logic in the comments section.

“Now they’ll have to ‘bear’ the consequences of their actions,” wrote a viewer.

Another poked fun at the fake claw marks on the leather.

“A bear with class,” they wrote. “Perfectly manicured claws and everything. That bear ONLY picked luxury cars.”

Someone else said their efforts were not worth the reward.

“Now they’re stuck with a damaged vehicle, a criminal record, and thousands of people laughing at your stupidity.”
