‘Unusual Activity Detected’ Baby Born in Driverless Waymo
One San Francisco child will have a wildly unique birth story. According to Google’s Waymo subsidiary, a woman gave birth in one of its driverless taxis en route to UC San Francisco Medical Center.
A spokesperson explained that the autonomous taxi detected “unusual activity.” You think? It must have alerted a real human at headquarters because the company called 911 and called the taxi to check on the passenger.
The Waymo rolled up to the hospital on schedule, but the baby had arrived early.
Waymo took its ‘delivery’ surprise in stride
Waymo said, “We’re proud to be a trusted ride for moments big and small, serving riders from just seconds old to many years young.”
Warm and fuzzies aside, I’m a bit shocked the pregnant mother opted for a driverless Waymo. A human driver behind the wheel of an Uber could step on it if she shouted, “The baby’s coming right now!” And that little luxury might have been worth a couple of bucks. She wouldn’t have been the first Uber passenger to give birth in the back seat.
“We wish the new family all the best, and we look forward to safely getting them where they’re going through many of life’s events.” — Waymo
Waymo took its unexpected “delivery” trip in stride. The company immediately pulled the cab in question off the road for cleaning. A spokesperson added that this has actually happened before in Waymos, but didn’t give further details.
