Ice, snow, and freezing conditions did not prevent protestors from gathering at Chapman Park. About 75 people gathered for another peaceful event. The park has experienced weekly events for about a year.
But for some reason, a plow truck driver couldn’t ignore them as he drove by. Instead of clearing the road for future traffic, he dropped the blade and targeted the group. He accelerated in their direction, sending ice and snow flying into the crowd.
The driver struck multiple people with enough force to knock them to the ground. Police officers immediately responded to take control of the situation. The suspect, identified as 65-year-old Michael Robison, has been taken into custody.
According to WABI, he faces charges of felony reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and driving to endanger. More assault charges are expected to follow.
The Rockland Police Department shares that it supports peaceful assembly. However, it does not tolerate violence or intimidation. Residents can expect to see an increase in police presence during future events.
Also, the department seeks to ensure the safety of the community. The priority is to guarantee that individuals can exercise their rights safely, without fear of being targeted by criminal acts for their beliefs.
There has been a recent increase in criminal activity targeting those exercising their First Amendment Rights. A flag was stolen in January, and that case remains under investigation. In February, a protester was assaulted by a person with an opposing view.
