Texas woman blocks Texas highway with gun and lawn chair
A Texas woman refused to exit her lawn chair as traffic drove around her on Interstate 45 near Cypresswood. Police officers initially responded to reports of an accident, involving a semi-truck on the highway.
It turns out that the woman intentionally struck the vehicle before starting a standoff that lasted for hours as she waved a gun around. Right after the accident, she got a chair for her vehicle and refused to get out of the way.
According to KHOU, traffic was shut down in both directions for five hours as police officers tried to de-escalate the situation. The SWAT team was called in to assist with the situation along with mental health experts.
A few of the woman’s family members arrived to speak with her as she refused to comply with officers. Reportedly, she has a history of mental illness.
Eventually, she dropped the gun and stood up and two officers gave her a big hug before taking her to a local hospital for evaluation. Luckily, no one was injured. Sheriff Cedrick Collier is grateful that she can receive the help she needs.
After about five hours, highway traffic was able to resume as normal. Hopefully, the semi-truck driver was able to continue along his route without being penalized for being late.
