[Video] Amazon truck driver holds burglar suspect in a headlock while waiting for police
Shannon Ghizzoni was preparing to go for a run in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio when she saw something out of the ordinary. She saw an Amazon delivery van parked on the lawn across the street. Even stranger, the van forced the railing that lined into the bushes.
Not long after she noticed something was amiss, police arrived with their guns drawn. Ghizzoni pulled out her camera and started filming. She initially thought authorities were detaining the driver or that the driver had crashed.
“Saw the cops, the police just flying in towards the van and jumping out with their guns drawn, so then I realized this was not just a car accident,” she told NBC 4.
It wasn’t until the driver emerged from the van with a man out of uniform in a headlock that she realized what happened.
Samuel Pritchard, a 24-year-old local, decided to try his luck and steal the van. He didn’t anticipate the driver, who was in the back of the van, to defend himself so ferociously while police made their way to the scene.
The driver’s actions were noble and courageous, but it distressed Ghizzoni to think of what other hazards Amazon drivers may face on the job.
“I was really upset that he had to go through that,” she continued. “I just feel really bad for the driver and I’m glad that everyone kind of got out without being injured and the fact there was no one on the street or sidewalk that could have been hit by that van.”
After police arrived, they promptly arrested Pritchard, charging him with robbery and attempting to inflict or threaten serious physical harm. They set his bond at $150,000.
Viewers praised the brave Amazon driver
There were over 300 comments on the outlet’s YouTube video, all of them praising the driver.
“Give that driver a raise!” wrote a commenter, earning 222 likes.
Another threatened to drop the e-commerce site if anything happened to the driver after the story went viral.
“Don’t you fire that driver because I, for one, would have to cancel my membership and shop elsewhere,” read their comment.
Someone else had questions about the charges imposed on Pritchard.
“Shouldn’t the perp also face kidnapping charges?”
