Every so often, a driver speeds or breaks another traffic law. When police try to pull them over, they lead authorities on a high-speed pursuit. More often, a confused or inebriated driver gets on the highway going the wrong way. When confronted, they pull over and apologize.

But in Alabama, a wrong-way driver turned it into a high-speed chase.

At 6:02 p.m. on Saturday, Hamilton, Alabama, police officers heard about a wrong-way driver cruising west on eastbound I-22. Police raced ahead to shut down all of eastbound I-22, hoping to limit danger to other drivers.

When the wrong-way driver arrived at the roadblock, they panicked. Did they get into the correct lane? No. Did they turn around and go in the correct direction? Also nope. Instead, the Alabama driver swerved into the median and kept driving west.

Hamilton Police Chief Carter realized the driver was heading toward Mississippi, so the department called ahead to officers in that state.

Finally, the driver spun around and headed east on eastbound I-22, then exited onto Highway 94 and fled into Mississippi. Authorities say they eventually caught up with the suspect after a single-vehicle crash.
