Kardareous Monteniz Gillis of Leeds, Alabama, led police on a chase that seemed to stop at nearly every recognizable business in town.

Police first responded to a report that Gillis, 31, committed a theft at a Bass Pro Shops. He then fled to a nearby Chevron parking lot.

When officers arrived to confront him, Gillis ran again. That’s when he jumped onto the rear of a vehicle stopped at a nearby intersection. The driver took off, but Gillis held on and rode the trunk all the way to the Buc-ee’s parking lot.

A desperate attempt to keep moving

When that vehicle stopped, Gillis ran to another parked car. A juvenile standing outside tried to shut the rear door, but Gillis forced it open and climbed into the back seat. He then moved into the driver’s seat.

Before he could drive away, the vehicle’s owner returned, grabbed Gillis, and pulled him out of the seat. Gillis abandoned the struggle and fled on foot once again.

Police later found him hiding beneath a nearby trash compactor. Officers arrested Gillis without further incident and found fentanyl on him.

Authorities say Gillis was wanted on multiple felony warrants and is being held without bail. His charges include first-degree kidnapping, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle by force, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, second-degree retail theft, tampering with physical evidence, attempting to elude, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
