Delaware police find abandoned truck filled with guns
Officers with the Lewes Police Department noticed an abandoned truck on Lewes Beach and decided to investigate. The Ford Ranger was discovered around 6:30 AM, bottomed out in the sand, near the water. It was about a half-mile away from multiple schools.
I’m not blaming the truck for getting stuck in the sand. Driving in sand is challenging, but I’ve seen the Ranger dominate in the Glamis sand dunes. If I had to guess, the truck was stuck due to the driver’s error.
Anyways, the plot thickens. According to WBOC, police officers found three handguns, a shotgun, and an assault rifle. Plus, there were hundreds of rounds of ammo. The license plates were also removed.
As a precaution, the police notified the Cape Henlopen School District, Beebe Hospital, and the University of Delaware. The schools in the area stayed open but operated on a secure status to keep teachers and students safe.
The truck is registered to a Maryland man identified as 30-year-old Alexander Gard. He’s currently homeless and has been detained as the ongoing investigation continues.
There are no reports of a planned attack. But he was found on the 400 block of E. Savannah Road after receiving reports of a possible mental health issue.
He claimed his truck was stolen, but declined the officer’s offer to take him to report the pickup as stolen. This was before the Ranger was found.
Gard was later found at an Airbnb and charged with five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and six counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited due to a prior violent felony crime.
