Police in Memphis, Tennessee are looking for a thief who made off with $7,000 from a Marathon gas station on Thanksgiving. Authorities say the man was shopping when two women began to fight inside the convenience store.

The fight was bad enough to force the clerk to escort them out of the store. The man stole a deposit bag behind the counter while the clerk was distracted. Police say the deposit bag had about $7,000 in cash inside, FOX 13 reported.

The thief drove away in an early 2000s maroon Ford Taurus with an Arkansas handicapped plate reading 393398.

Readers had their suspicions

The outlet posted the story to its official Facebook page, and locals following the page developed their own theories as to what happened.

“I wonder if he split it between the two women,” wrote a reader.

Something else suspected it was a group project, but the women would be disappointed.

“I bet he agreed to split it. But he’s probably not going to them anything!”

Another guessed he needed the cash for Christmas shopping.

“Oh, he’s just getting ready for Christmas,” their comment read.
