300,000 Chrysler Pacifica vans are being investigated for faulty steering
The classic minivan has a reputation for being a safe family hauling option. However, over 287,000 Chrysler Pacifica models could be going against this stereotype. The van is being investigated over a potential problem with the electric power steering.
Chrysler Pacifica vans are getting probed for steering problems
Certain models of the Chrysler Pacifica might have some explaining to do. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is launching an investigation after receiving 94 complaints about the electric power steering system.
Roughly 300,000 models built in 2017 and 2018 could be at risk. The problem is related to a sudden loss of power steering assistance.
Reportedly, the steering system in some minivans exhibits a sticking sensation during gradual turns. This primarily occurs around the 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock positions.
When it happens, drivers shared that it takes increased effort to return the wheel to the center. It’s often followed by the sudden reactivation of EPS assistance.
There are reports of the problem causing an oversteering condition in response to the problem. This causes drivers to make unintentionally wide turns.
The condition increases the risk of unintentional wide turns. This increases the risk of accidents and injuries, especially at higher speeds.
Investigators will look for the frequency, root cause, and potential safety-related consequences of this alleged electric power steering malfunction.
Based on what the investigation finds, Chrysler may issue a recall to correct the problem. Should this be the case, owners at risk will be notified via mail. They will have to visit a local dealership for a free repair.
