Three semi-trucks and one SUV collide on Pennsylvania highway
Pennsylvania police officers and other emergency responders, such as firefighters and hazmat crews, sprang into action! A four-vehicle crash brought traffic on Interstate 83 to a stop for hours.
The tractor-trailers and SUV got into a scramble on the northbound lanes near Exit 8, Route 216/Glen Rock in Springfield Township.
One of the trucks was hauling a flatbed trailer with aluminum blocks. The blocks became dislodged during the collision and blocked the road. Another truck started leaking diesel all over the pavement.
According to WGAL, crews from the York County PA Office of Emergency Management worked for hours to clean up the mess. Hopefully, the soil wasn’t contaminated. Also, another truck was brought in to haul the large aluminum blocks away.
All northbound lanes were closed as it took hours to sort out the mess and clear the crashed trucks. Traffic was backed up for several miles, causing significant delays. Drivers were directed to take the exit ramp at Exit 8 and then were directed back on the interstate.
Pennsylvania State Police is investigating the accident. Luckily, there were no reports of injuries, which is pretty rare in a wreck of this scale!
But I imagine that the drivers are experiencing headaches. They have a lot to explain to their insurance carriers, and things get even muddier with truck companies get involved with all their polices.
