3 full-size trucks for 2025 secretly require premium fuel
Oh uh, a few of the most popular full-size trucks are thirstier than expected. Three 2025 models secretly require premium fuel, causing prices to rise at the pump. But perhaps the extra juice is worth it for more power.
Which full-size trucks need premium fuel in 2025?
The 2025 full-size truck models that require premium fuel in 2025 are the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 6.2-liter V8 engine, the 2025 Ford F-150 with EcoBoost engines, and the 2025 Ram 1500 with the Hurricane engine.
Note that the GMC Sierra 1500 is also included because it uses the same 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. These trucks are basically twins, but the Sierra is the luxury version of the Silverado.
You need to use premium fuel to achieve the engine’s fuel potential. According to Pickup Truck Talk, the owner’s manual recommends using octane 91, but you might be fine with octane 87. However, octane 87 will result in reduced performance and drivability.
The 2025 Ford F-150 EcoBoost engines also require premium fuel, but this isn’t new. The turbocharged engines have required premium fuel for years as it burns cooler, keeping the turbos at the optimal temperature to improve durability and performance.

Ford owner manuals recommend using 87 octane in most cases. But for the best overall performance use premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher.
The performance boost with premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather or in other conditions while towing a trailer. Also, this recommendation is for each EcoBoost engine, including the high-output Ford Raptor engine.
Also, the 2025 Ram 1500 requires premium fuel for the new Hurricane engine. The 3.0-liter inline-six engine has two outputs. The Standard Output model provides 420 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque.
The High Output variant cranks out 540 hp and 521 lb-ft of torque. Ram recommends using 87 octane with the Standard Output engine and 91 octane for the High Output engine. Running 87 octane with the High Output engine will reduce its performance.
