A 1977 Stutz Blackhawk VI purchased new by baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays and owned for the rest of his life is currently up for auction. Despite the classic car being almost 30 years old, Mays only put 17,000 miles on the odometer.

Stutz manufactured the Blackhawk from 1971 through 1987. However, Stutz Motor Car of America produced only 500 to 600 of the cars. In 1971, the Blackhawk’s factory price was $22,500 (approximately $170,000 to $180,000 in today’s money). The Blackhawk’s base price went up to $47,500 in 1976 (roughly $265,000 to $270,000 today).

None other than Elvis Presley purchased the very first Blackhawk ever sold. Other famous people who owned Stutz Blackhawks include Frank Sinatra, Evel Knievel, Johnny Cash, Liberace, Lucille Ball, Muhammad Ali, Willie Nelson, and Paul McCartney.

Willie Mays’ Stutz Blackhawk is loaded with extras

The 1977 Stutz Blackhawk VI owned by Willie Mays, according to its listing on Bring a Trailer, is finished in metallic aqua with chrome bumpers. A 403ci General Motors V8 paired with a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission powers the Blackhawk. The Stutz also boasts 16″ wire wheels finished in chrome, Vogue whitewall tires, simulated side exhaust pipes, and a “SAYHEY8” license plate.

A look inside the luxury coupe reveals power-adjustable seats trimmed in tan Connolly leather, woodgrain and gold-plated interior trim, lambswool floor mats, and stainless-steel sill guards. Mays’ Blackhawk also has a car phone, CB radio, and an AM/FM cassette stereo.

The winning bidder will also receive Willie Mays’ original purchase paperwork and a baseball bearing Mays’ signature. A dash-mounted plaque denotes that Stutz built the car especially for Mays.
