A one-of-one 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Bianco Speciale was the highest-priced sale at the Mecum Kissimmee auction in Florida. The 250 GTO is also just one of the 36 that Ferrari made in total.

The only 250 GTO finished in Bianco by Ferrari sold for $38.5 million. While that certainly is a lot of money to pay for a single automobile, it didn’t come close to the record $70 million that someone paid for one in 2018.

Why did a one-of-a-kind Ferrari GTO 250 ‘only’ sell for $38.5 million?

The reason why the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO 3729GT “only” sold for $38.5 million may have had something to do with the engine. A previous owner had to replace the original engine in 2023 after former F1 driver Karun Chandhok drove it at the Goodwood Revival in 2023. Ferrari Classiche replaced it with a Colombo V12 that they built.

Despite the engine change, there are still plenty of other reasons why it fetched such an exorbitant price. Looming large among those reasons is the fact that it was driven in competition by Graham Hill, Jack Sears, Mike Parkes, Roy Salvadori, Mike MacDowel, Mike Salmon, and Richie Ginther.

In fact, this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO placed second overall in the RAC Tourist Trophy Race at Goodwood in 1962 and 1963. The Bianco Speciale also finished first in the GT class for the 1963 Guards Trophy Race at Brands Hatch.

The winning bidder was more than happy with his purchase

David Lee, who already owns a Ferrari 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari, was the winning bidder.

“I am proud to be part of Ferrari’s history book as the newest custodian of this masterpiece,” he wrote on Instagram. “I have been collecting for a long time now and have had many goals. The big five in red. The big five in yellow. The F80. But the top of the mountain, the last infinity stone of Ferrari collecting is the 250 GTO.

“I am humbled and honored to have achieved this goal. … Remember to always dream big, no matter how impossible the goal may seem. I look forward to sharing with you all my journey.”
