The $13,000 Toyota Hilux Champ is the small truck America needs
I know I’m not alone in wanting tiny truck rumors to become a reality. But why does Toyota continue to tease my emotions about considering one for the United States, other countries already have a cooler option. Why can’t we have the $13,000 Toyota Hilux Champ?
Why isn’t the $13,000 Toyota Hilux Champ in America?
I’m sure you’ve been following Toyota for more tiny truck rumors. Some claim that Toyota is making a compact truck out of the RAV4 SUV. Plus, there are reports of making a truck that’s based on the Toyota Corolla Cross.
However, while drivers are busy thinking about new trucks, my eyes are on affordable options that already exist in other countries. For example, the $13,000 Toyota Hilux Champ only covers the basics, but it’s pretty darn cool.
It’s spreading from Thailand to Japan and more as it takes the brand back to the basics by offering a small, affordable truck. It builds upon the Toyota IMV 0 with short and long-wheelbase version.
Available engines include a 2.0-liter gas, 2.4-liter gas, and 2.4-liter diesel options. The base model has crank windows with plastics and rubbers in the cab. The deck comes without sides, but is upgradable.
According to Slash Gear, the truck is delivered 70% finished leaving drivers with 30% customizable options. You can outfit it as a food truck, for overlanding, and more. There are over 100 accessory manufacturers.
Allegedly, the United States doesn’t have a market for stripped-down trucks. However, people went nuts for the Ford Maverick and Slate EV truck. Plus, kei trucks are gaining popularity. In my humble opinion, kei trucks or cheaper options would soar in the United States.
