At first glance, it might seem that Cher, a flight attendant who posts videos about her experiences under the TikTok handle @cherdallas, is a big germaphobe. After watching her reels of the most disgusting passenger zones she’s observed on an airplane, though, I’ll join her grossed-out club. These guaranteed yucks will have you Lysoling everything you touch next time you fly.

Cher says that in her five years as a flight attendant, she estimates that a plane gets a “deep” cleaning every 10 trips. Still, she makes it obvious that her definition of “clean” is much different than airline standards.

In her first TikTok on the topic, Cher lists seven passenger areas on planes she rarely (if ever) sees getting cleaned.

Replying to @Spencer sorry in advance if this grosses you out the next time you fly but everyone should have the facts #flightattendantlife #flightattendant

Her initial list includes:

  • The plastic window shades
  • Bathroom sinks
  • Sink water (which isn’t potable, so she warns us not to drink it)
  • Toilet seats
  • Carpeting
  • Seat belt straps
  • Overhead luggage bins

Cher says that she’s never seen the window shades wiped down, ever. Head to the bathroom, though, and things quickly decline. As you might imagine, she witnesses passengers getting sick in the sink. When the next passengers enter, then, they might consider anything they drop in the sink a lost cause. We shouldn’t even need to mention the toilet seat. Folks also need to know that the bathroom sink water isn’t drinkable.

Back to the cabin zone, Cher considers the carpet completely filthy. The flight attendant says people often get sick on the carpets and rub their bare feet on it. Seat belt straps are just as bad. From vomit to diaper contents, the straps are basically a bio-hazard she doesn’t see getting cleaned after a flight.

The flight attendant also mentions overhead luggage bins. She hasn’t witnessed any cleaning protocol there, either. Since folks bring their bags into airport bathrooms and then onto the airplane, your bag is likely covered in germs from the airport floors and even touching what got dragged there from other peoples’ homes. Cher doesn’t trust how clean everyone’s houses are, so not knowing what’s in the luggage bins is a huge yuck factor for her.

Replying to @smeccea sorry in advance but I don’t think this list is quite as bad #flightattendantlife #flightattendant

Next, Cher covers:

  • Inside the service coffee pot
  • The carpeting (again, so I’m not counting it)
  • The potable water tank

The flight attendant says that the bottom of the service coffee pot might have a “dark rust” baked onto it. She still drinks out of it on tough days, but it took her a couple of years to get used to the idea. After mentioning the carpet again, Cher also shares that a pilot once told her he saw a crew member accidentally put the waste water tank on top of the potable water valve.

Replying to @Tarameesue i will never ever ever be comfortable traveling in shorts bc I have seen far too much. #flightattendant #flightattendantlife

Finally, she unveils several more gross zones on an airplane:

  • Seat cushions
  • Seat pockets
  • Air vents
  • The space between the carpeting and the window seat

The flight attendant explains that seat cushions and seat pockets don’t always get a good cleaning. Neither do the air vents above our heads. If you drop something between the window seat and the carpeting, like an airpod, be sure to disinfect it before using it.

Several times, Cher assumes her viewers are germaphobes bringing Lysol wipes with them on an airplane. After her videos, I’d be surprised if the rest of us don’t start wiping down everything we’ll make direct contact with. You can decide how far to go with preventing contact with the above germs, and apologies for the aforementioned yucks.
