1 glaring issue holds the Ford Maverick Lobo back from greatness
Every so often, I review a truck that gets a lot of attention. For example, men and children rushed to check out the Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter and share compliments. But recently, my Ford Maverick Lobo loaner gained surprisingly negative attention due to one functional design choice.
People don’t like the wheels on the Ford Maverick Lobo
While the Ford Maverick Lobo is easily one of the top models I’ve reviewed compared to the XL entry-level trim and the Lariat trim equipped with the FX4 package. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to enjoy the Maverick Tremor or hybrid engine yet.
But I waited a very long time to play with the Maverick Lobo for a week. Ever since the Maverick Tucci race truck concept dropped at SEMA in 2021.
You can tell that it heavily influenced the style of the Lobo with a lowered suspension, tweaks to improve its aerodynamics, and turbofan-style wheels.

But that’s part of the problem. Many spectators online and in person immediately said, “I don’t like the way those wheels look.” They disregarded all that the Lobo has to offer because of the wide, flat wheel design.
They were called bland and boring. I think it’s refreshing to see a unique style, though. Turbofan wheels have a purpose for racing innovation.
The wheels are designed to assist with aerodynamics and cool the brakes by channeling air. Get it? They send air through the fan part of the wheel, which is why there are cutouts around the edges.
I have a longer review and trim level comparison planned in the pipeline. But I had to get the negative reaction to the wheels off my chest before doing a deeper dive.
Some of the Maverick Lobo’s positive features include having the most comfortable seats, the best handling, and the quietest interior. Negatives include making me nervous with a lowered suspension for doing truck stuff and the $40,495 MSRP.
