Only 1 electric car is outselling the immortal Toyota Prius hybrid
When every other automaker was building and selling traditional ICE vehicles, Toyota launched its 1997 Prius hybrid. When nearly every other automaker was banking on new fully electric powertrains, Toyota designed an all-new Prius hybrid for 2023. This snazzy redesign has sales up 85.5%. That means the only electric car outselling the Prius hybrid is Tesla’s Model 3.
So far in 2025, Toyota has sold 42,964 Prius cars in North America. That’s split between regular hybrids and “Prime” plug-in hybrids with up to 44 miles of electric-only range.
These sales numbers reveal just how much American buyers love a traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid from an automaker with Toyota’s reputation for reliability. Meanwhile, most of the electric sedans available can’t catch the Prius’ sales.
While other automakers flip-flop, Toyota is steadily electrifying its entire lineup. After proving hybrids are more reliable than ICE vehicles, it is tossing its solely ICE powertrains. The 2026 RAV4 crossovers will all be hybrids, and the Camry is already 100% hybrid. And while the Tesla Model Y and Chevy Equinox EV crossovers outsell the Prius, they can’t touch the RAV4 sales in the U.S. While EV sales lag, Toyota’s proving hybrid demand is stronger than it’s ever been.
