If you are looking for a mid-size truck that is capable of off-road use, the Nissan Frontier might have caught your attention. But, a 2022 Frontier is not for everyone, especially if you do not want to spend over $30,000 on a truck. Thankfully, there are a range of different used options on the market for the Frontier. And that will allow you to find a mid-size pickup that fits within your budget. Especially if you are looking for an off-roader.

Which used Nissan Frontier is best?

The Nissan Frontier has been around for some time. And that is especially true for the second generation of this truck. For nearly 20 years, Nissan did not update its mid-size pickup. Because of that, there are a range of used options to consider.

The 2016 Nissan Frontier might represent one of the better values. Especially with its PRO-4X trim. The PRO-4X is the off-road version of the Frontier. It adds a number of different off-road features to help you navigate the road less traveled.

One of the notable features of this pickup is that it comes standard with the 4.0-liter V6 engine. This will give you 261 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque. You might even be able to find one with a manual transmission.

Is the Nissan Frontier good off-road?

With the PRO-4X trim, even a pre-owned Frontier is a competent off-road truck. According to Motor1, the interior of the 2016 Frontier does feel a bit dated. But that does make sense, considering the second generation of the Frontier was first released in 2005.

A couple of features that help this truck handle off-road situations are its standard 4WD and a locking rear differential. Both of these features are key for a successful off-road vehicle. So it is nice that they come standard on the PRO-4X trim.

How much should you pay for a Frontier PRO-4X?

In terms of cost, a 2016 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X will likely have a cost of around $20,000. Now, that does depend on mileage and condition, but you will be getting quite a bit of truck for your money. Models that have under 100,000 miles look like they go for around $29,000, so keep that in mind as you shop for your mid-size pickup.

The used truck market is still fairly turbulent due to supply chain issues. So it is possible that the Frontier will come down in price at some point.

Should you buy a Frontier PRO-4X?

If you are interested in a mid-size truck, a used Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is a good pick. And the 2016 model is a good mix of features and value. Plus, it will likely be more affordable than something like a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.

There have been some models of the Frontier that are unreliable. But for the most part, this pickup should be a safe buy. Especially if you do things like check the service history and buy from a reputable source.
