Both of these SUVs are pretty thirsty. The Surban gets an EPA estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The Expedition gets an EPA estimated 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, so the Expedition is the gas guzzler here.

Ford Expedition and Chevy Suburban performance

The 2021 Ford Expedition has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Platinum edition increases the horsepower to 400. When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 lb.

The 2021 Chevy Suburban has three engines. The base option is a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2-liter V8 pumps out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. You can also upgrade to the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine for 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, the Suburban can tow up to 8,200 lb.

Both models come with standard rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive is available. Edmunds shared that the Chevy Suburban’s sheer size is pretty noticeable. However, it has a new independent rear suspension that helps improve the smooth ride.

The Suburban is also available with an air-spring suspension and adaptive dampeners. The steering is direct, and the handling is very responsive. Thanks to the Suburban’s peppy acceleration, it’s a lot of fun.

Edmunds noted that the 2021 Ford Expedition is also pretty fast. But it has a soft brake pedal that can make you lose confidence. It has pretty average handling, but it’s surprisingly easy to navigate through the city.

Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition features

The 2021 Ford Expedition may have some wind noise in the cabin at higher speeds, but it’s very comfortable. There is more than enough space for all passengers. The 2021 Chevy Suburban feels fresh in comparison, thanks to its redesigned interior.

For the first time, the 2021 Suburban has sliding seats in the second row and an optional power-folding function in the third row. Compared to the previous generation, it has enhanced quality and is more practical.

The Chevy Suburban comes with a standard 10-inch touchscreen and the Ford Expedition comes with an 8-inch touchscreen. Both of these SUVs include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. They both offer a rear entertainment system for the kiddos too.

Also, both of these SUVs could benefit from more standard safety features. They both come with standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian protection, but lane-keeping assistance and other features cost extra.
