Just in time to fend off rivals, the 2021 Ford Expedition is adding more standard and optional features. Hopefully, for Ford’s sake, these new features will be enough to take on the popular 2021 Chevy Tahoe.

The 2021 Ford Expedition gains more features

Those who want to drive the massive 8-seater Ford Expedition can now benefit from new standard and optional features. The 2021 Ford Expedition will now include USB ports for passengers in the second row to charge their favorite devices.

This could help family vacations go a bit more smoothly as antsy kids asking if we’re there yet are entertained. The Ford XLT and Limited trims will also receive front seats that include two-way manually adjustable headrests to increase comfort on long drives.

You can also choose the optional STX package that includes a grille with five chrome-look slats, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment center that displays Ford SYNC 3 technology, and tri-zone automatic climate control to keep passengers in each row comfortable.

A 4G LTE mobile hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto come standard. You can pay extra for navigation, real-time traffic, and weather data. Also, a rear-seat entertainment system is available on the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims.

2021 Ford Expedition power updates

Aside from those changes, the only new look for 2021 will include new wheel designs, including 17-inch steelies, 22-inch alloys, and everything in between. Also, so far, the 2021 Ford Expedition isn’t expected to receive any mechanical upgrades.

The 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine that pumps out 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque will most likely be carried over. This is the same engine that’s found in the Lincoln Navigator. The Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,300 lb, and the Max trim is capped at 9,000 lb.

According to CarAndDriver, the independent rear suspension in the Ford Expedition provides a smoother ride than Chevrolet and GMC rivals that have live-axle setups. But the handling and steering aren’t too great for the driver.

Also, the 2021 Ford Expedition isn’t great on fuel. The all-wheel-drive model gets about 22 mpg on the highway. The regular-sized Expedition and longer Expedition Max both got about 20 mpg during the CarandDriver 200-mile highway fuel-economy route too.

The 2021 Ford Expedition interior

Each 2021 Ford Expedition comes with 15 cupholders and a power-folding third-row seat for convenience. The Platinum trim comes with massaging front seats, leather door-trim accents, real wood on the center console, etc.

Both the second and third-row fold completely flat for easy storage access. There are 20.9 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk area and 104.6 cubic feet. The Max trim comes with extra interior cubby storage. A three-seater bench comes standard in the second row, but you can upgrade to captain seats.

Standard safety features include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection. You can add adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-departure warning. The IIHS hasn’t officially tested the 2021 model for safety yet. However, the 2020 Ford Expedition received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA.
