Many believe only pickup trucks can tow heavy items like car trailers or heavy machinery. But since many three-row SUVs rely on similar body-on-frame architecture, they are often just as strong. Plus, you don’t have to fork over thousands to install a bed topper. With so many newcomers to the SUV segment, you’re probably unaware that the Jeep Wagoneer is the SUV with the highest towing capacity of all.

Jeep Wagoneer is the SUV with the highest towing capacity

The all-new three-row SUV from Jeep boasts a manufacturer-claimed 10,000 pounds of pulling power and a fancy Quadra-Lift air suspension system. Configured with the equally-new 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, the Wagoneer can provide 420 horsepower and 486 pounds-feet of torque. Properly equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow package, the Hurricane-powered SUV can manage a full, fat 10,000 pounds, Jeep says.

If a V8 is more your bag, you can get the tried-and-true 5.7-liter Hemi. With a mild hybrid system, the powerplant produces 470 horsepower and 455 pounds-feet of torque. And it can also tow a class-leading five tons.

What’s in the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow package?

With the optional extra, potential buyers gain a slew of features to ensure their Wagoneer remains the SUV with the highest towing capacity. For instance, the electronic rear limited-slip differential gains a 3.92 axle ratio, and the engine is fitted with additional radiators for extra cooling. And it has an integrated trailer brake control making stopping trailers a breeze.

Managing gradients is also something the Jeep Wagoneer does well with the Selec-Speed Control system’s Hill Ascent/Descent Control features. Moreover, an available Trailer Hitch Zoom camera system makes reversing and connecting trailers much easier. And it’s all for just $1,295.

Regardless, each Jeep Wagoneer comes standard with a Class IV receiver hitch. As well, a seven and four-pin wiring harness.

Jeep’s luxury adventure bus is undoubtedly the SUV with the highest towing capacity. However, it’s also the SUV with one of the highest starting prices. The entry-level Wagoneer has a starting MSRP of $58,995. Of course, that’s without the $2,000 destination fee, the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow package, or the 3,000 four-wheel drive option.

With a classier interior and a few more bells and whistles, the Wagoneer Series II comes in at $65,725, and the Carbide trim level at $68,775. For the top-of-the-line SUV with the highest towing capacity, the Jeep Wagoneer Series III will set potential buyers back $71,865.
