The Ford Maverick small pickup truck is changing the truck game. The Maverick is different from most vehicles in its vehicle class. Ford has created several different configurations for the Maverick that give the small truck different capabilities. Has the Maverick made the Ford Ranger obsolete?

The Ford Maverick comes in three different trim levels. Ford offers two engine options for the small pickup truck and different packages like the 4K Tow Package and the upcoming 2023 Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package.

The Maverick can be fuel efficient, powerful, and capable depending on how drivers configure the small truck. The base model is pretty barebones, but even the final Lariat trim level is affordable. With so many Maverick options available, Ford fans have to wonder where the Ranger stands after the success of Ford’s newest small pickup.

The standard Ford Maverick hybrid pickup starts at just $20,995. It achieves an incredible 42 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The Maverick can tow 4,000 pounds when equipped with the EcoBoost engine option and the 4K Tow Package. The Tremor Off-Road Package features a suspension upgrade, 9.4 inches of ground clearance, and all-terrain tires to make the small truck fit for off-road adventuring. What can’t the Maverick do?

The Ford Ranger is still in a lane of its own

The Maverick’s affordability, unique standard hybrid powertrain, and remarkable dimensions may get more attention than the Ranger at the moment, but the Ford Ranger still occupies a space that the Maverick cannot. The Ford Ranger is a midsize pickup truck. It has a larger truck bed and is better suited for typical “truck stuff” because of its dimensions. The Ranger is featured on a list of best compact pickup trucks compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

The Ford Ranger is 211 inches long, 78 inches wide, and 71 inches tall. The Maverick is 200 inches long, 73 inches wide, and 69 inches tall. The Ford Ranger has a maximum bed length of 72 inches. The Maverick’s truck bed is only 54 inches long. The Ford Maverick’s truck bed, the Flexbed, is fully customizable thanks to pre-threaded holes and slots, but it’s still incredibly small.

The Blue Oval has room for the Maverick and the Ranger because of the major size difference between the two pickup trucks. The Ranger is nearly a foot longer than the Maverick. It competes with midsize pickup trucks that the Maverick can’t stand against, like the Honda Ridgeline and the Toyota Tacoma. The Maverick is also underpowered compared to the Ford Ranger. Ultimately, the Maverick can’t replace the Ranger because they offer different characteristics and capabilities.

Which small Ford truck is the better buy?

The Ford Maverick is the better option for drivers looking to save money. Its standard hybrid powertrain is like nothing else in the pickup truck vehicle segment.

The Ford Ranger is the more conventional pickup truck. Since the Maverick is so much smaller than the Ranger, it isn’t a fair comparison. Both Ford pickup trucks have important roles to play in the Blue Oval’s lineup.
