Former Formula 1 Driver and F3 Teammate of Lewis Hamilton Arrested in ‘International Raid’
Former Formula 1 driver Adrian Sutil has reportedly been arrested as part of what’s being called an “international raid.” The 42-year-old Sutil competed in F1 from 2007 and 2014.
The German former F1 driver was reportedly arrested by the Stuttgart State Criminal Police. He was charged with “aggravated joint fraud and joint embezzlement.” According to Bild, Sutil was sent to pre-trial detention in a prison in Baden-Württemberg following his arrest.
A spokesperson for the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office stated Adrian Sutil was taken into custody after raids in Monaco, Switzerland, and Sindelfingen (Baden-Württemberg). The spokesperson said those locations “were searched together with the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office.”
Sutil has yet to publicly speak out about his arrest, and his lawyer did not respond to requests for comment from Bild.
In addition to racing, Adrian Sutil is known for having a massive collection of supercars. As of 2022, he reportedly owned 12 Koenigsegg supercars, 7 Pagani supercars, 8 Ferrari supercars, 10 Bugattis, two Lamborghinis, 2 Mercedes-Benz supercars, a McLaren, 2 Aston Martins, and 3 Porsches.
Adrian Sutil has had previous run-ins with the law
In 2011, Adrian Sutil was charged with injuring Genii Capital CEO and the then-owner of the Lotus F1 team, Eric Lux, with a champagne glass in a Shanghai nightclub. He was found guilty and sentenced to an 18-month suspended prison term and a €200,000 ($232,048) fine.
Sutil later apologized and claimed that the injury suffered by Lux, who required 24 stitches in his neck, was unintentional.
Lewis Hamilton, who was present at the club during the incident, was named as a defense witness, but did not appear in court. He stated that he could not attend because the court date was on the same day as the launch of his team’s car.
Adrian Sutil’s racing career and connection to Lewis Hamilton
Prior to the trial, Adrian Sutil and Lewis Hamilton had been friends. The two had been teammates on the ASM Formula 3 team in 2005. Their relationship ended when Sutil called Hamilton a “coward” for refusing to testify in his defense.
Sutil would go on to enter Formula 1 in 2007 with the Spyker/Force India team. He raced for the team until his release following his assault conviction in 2011. After a year out of F1, he returned to Force India in 2013.
Adrian Sutil moved to the Sauber F1 team in 2014, but was replaced after just one season. The following year, he served as a reserve driver for Williams.
In 128 career F1 starts, Sutil earned zero wins, zero podium finishes, and a total of 124 points. His one highlight was turning in the fastest lap of the 2009 Italian Grand Prix.
