Toyota has a reputation for being one of the most reliable automakers. However, like all others, Toyota has a few models with several owner complaints. Unfortunately, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has the most complaints for the year. This doesn’t mean there aren’t some buyers who have excellent experiences with their Corolla Cross, but it does mean buyers should maybe think twice before investing in one.

Here’s a look into the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross and the complaints owners have regarding the SUV.

According to the NHTSA, the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross has 117 verified complaints. This is more than any other 2023 Toyota model, which makes it an overall unreliable choice for buyers. The major problem is that the engine has the most complaints, which means this Toyota SUV has serious mechanical issues. It’d be a bit different if the majority of complaints were for something minor, such as an accessory.

The most common problem with the engine is that the vehicle loses power randomly. Unfortunately, many people reported not the car not starting after this. This is especially concerning for a brand-new vehicle. In some cases, an indicator came on to say that power steering was low. Luckily, some people were able to put the SUV in park and then get it to start.

Making sense of these findings

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross having as many complaints as it does may not be surprising. This is because it’s a relatively new model from the automotive giant. Historically, more recent models have more problems than more established nameplates. This may sound odd, but automakers are often working out the kinks for the first couple of model years, and the Corolla Cross didn’t arrive until 2022.

For example, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner and the RAV4 have fewer complaints. The 4Runner only has 11 verified complaints from owners, while the RAV4 has only 21. The Toyota 4Runner has no verified complaints about the engine, and the RAV4 only has two. These Toyota SUVs having fewer complaints shows that these more established Toyota SUVs don’t have the same severe problems as the relatively new Corolla Cross.

It’s difficult to say buyers should avoid a vehicle. This is the case because no two vehicles are the same. Yes, this is the Toyota model with the most complaints. However, some owners have a relatively painless experience with the subcompact SUV. Still, it’s perhaps best to be cautious, and maybe people should wait a few years before getting one.

Beyond the complaints about the Toyota Corolla Cross, it’s easy to see why so many people decide to buy it. It has a great look and decent scores from J.D. Power. Additionally, it’s an overall efficient vehicle. However, investing in one this early in its run may not be the best decision.
