BMW knows how to build the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’. Drawing on its storied racing history, the German marque makes cars with an ideal balance of acceleration, handling, and style. Add in luxurious interiors with a handcrafted feel, and you’ve got a superb all-around ride.

And tuning firm Alpina makes BMWs even better. Since 1965, they’ve enhanced various models for even better performance and comfort, with subtle styling cues to match. Today, a fine example of their work is the 2023 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe.

What makes this Alpina such a special car? Let’s look at the specs.

2023 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: features, specs, pricing

Starting with the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe, Alpina adjusts and refines nearly every detail. That results in a track-ready long-distance cruiser, with added exclusivity and character.

The M8 Competition is an exemplary platform, with the best of BMW’s mechanical know-how. Using a twin-turbo V8, Active M differential, and 6-piston Brembo brakes, this four-door performer can spin laps all day. And since it has the brand’s usual plush interior, it’s also ready for comfortable trips large and small.

But Alpina makes the M8 Competition even better.

Under the hood, Alpina tunes the engine for improved low-end response. That results in 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, for a loss of 5 ponies and an increase of 37 lb-ft of twist. While horsepower is typically the name of the game, torque gives an engine satisfying grunt. And the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe has power to spare.

During testing, Edmunds noted the B8 Gran Coupe’s strong acceleration, with a supercar-like 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds. While that’s a little behind the M8, the B8’s torque gives it a pleasing off-the-line push. Key to the Alpina’s performance are an active stainless-steel exhaust system and a recalibrated automatic transmission.

Edmunds also praised the Alpina’s exceptional comfort. Instead of the M8 Competition’s racy attitude, the B8 Gran Coupe concentrates on a plush ride. Despite riding on 21-inch wheels, the B8’s tuned active suspension smooths out every imperfection.

And inside, the B8 really shines.

Adjustable seats feature supple merino leather. The ultra-quiet cabin makes every drive more enjoyable. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system offers top-rate tech. Ideal ergonomics provide long-haul comfort and everyday usability.

Beyond that, the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe has elegant looks and unique exclusivity. Understated Alpina badging hints at the B8’s special qualities. The tuner’s trademark turbine wheels add a sophisticated feel. And with limited production numbers, it’s a rare sight on the road.

But the Alpina isn’t perfect. Edmunds felt its 4,715 curb weight led to ponderous handling, and slightly numb steering took away from its back road driving performance. Still, with the B8’s emphasis on luxury, those weren’t dealbreakers.

The Alpina B8 is a rare, handmade ride. But with a $145,895 MSRP—$7,095 more than the M8 Competition Gran Coupe—is the B8 Gran Coupe worth it?

2023 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe: tailored luxury and performance

For the discerning enthusiast, the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe is a superb pick and definately worth the cost of entry. While the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe is an athletic sports sedan, the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe adds refinement and comfort.

Combined with Alpina’s subtle styling cues and low production numbers, the B8 gives buyers a rare ride to be proud of. The Alpina has a premium price, but its handmade build makes it worth it. With the German tuner’s long history and known expertise, drivers can trust they’re getting something special.
