The Tacoma has long been Toyota’s mid-size pickup truck. And it has also remained one of the top-selling trucks on the market for some time. In 2022, something strange seems to be happening: sales of the Tacoma have been on the decline. Now, the Tacoma is not the only mid-size pickup with slowing sales, the Honda Ridgeline also had a drop in sales. So, is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma actually in trouble?

Is the Toyota Tacoma still a good truck?

The Tacoma is somewhat of an iconic pickup truck, and for 2022, it is still a solid buy. With its available V6 engine, you can benefit from 270 horsepower and even a manual transmission. Something that other mid-size trucks have slowly been getting rid of.

This vehicle might not be as refined as the Chevy Colorado, but truck buyers seem to prefer something that feels rugged. And the Tacoma can certainly come equipped as a rugged pickup. This Toyota still offers its TRD Pro trim as well, giving you the benefits of an off-road truck.

How well does the Tacoma sell?

According to TFLtruck, sales of the Tacoma dropped almost 20% compared from April 2021 to April 2022. Now, that does not necessarily mean that the Tacoma has dropped in quality or reliability. With the current supply chain issues, buying a new truck is not really an easy task. And dealerships still seem to struggle to keep inventory on their lots.

Another factor that might be affecting sales of this Toyota truck could be the expected redesign. The Tacoma has been in its third generation since 2015. And by 2024, we should finally see what the fourth generation holds for this vehicle.

Should you buy the 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

If you are shopping for a new mid-size truck, the 2022 Tacoma is worthy of consideration. That is especially true if you want a pickup that is capable of off-road duty. The TRD Pro model comes equipped with an electronically locking rear differential as well as a factory lift.

It also features FOX off-road shocks and skid plates to help you handle the road less traveled. The biggest downside of the TRD Pro model might be its price, which is $46,585.

Of course, there are other 2022 Tacoma models available. Allowing buyers to get the right amount of truck for their specific needs. Even the base SR trim comes with active safety features and can be equipped with the V6 engine. Which is something to be appreciated.

What does the Tacoma compete with?

There are no shortage of mid-size trucks on today’s market. The Tacoma competes with models like the Jeep Gladiator, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Frontier. Each of these pickups brings something unique to the table. So, ultimately it may fall to personal preference on which is right for you.

But, do keep in mind that a redesigned Tacoma is on the way. And if the new Tundra is any indication, it could be a pretty great pickup to buy.
