The Acura MDX’s last redesign was for the 2014 model year, so it’s definitely long overdue for an upgrade. After taking a gap year, the Acura MDX is back for the 2022 model year with plenty of new features. The Acura MDX was already a pretty good luxury SUV, so how will these improvements make it better? Motor Trend had some pleasant things to say.

The new Acura MDX gets an updated appearance

The outgoing model had a decently opulent cabin, but many critics thought that its rivals were superior. The interior is now comprised of some more upscale materials to make it more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The exterior has also been modified to look more athletic compared to last year’s MDX.

The Acura MDX’s handling will also probably be better for 2022 thanks to its new suspension. The previous model has a multi-link rear suspension, but this new one is a double A-arm employed on many sports cars. To complement its sportier chassis, the new MDX also has an aggressive new grille design and brighter LED taillights.

Interior space has also increased for both passengers and cargo inside the Acura MDX. The MDX can sit up to seven people and now there’s more space for adults in the third row. The rear row’s legroom is now one inch longer than it was previously. Thankfully, the button that folds and slides the second row for easier rear access is still included.

Expect even more technology in the 2022 Acura MDX

The Acura MDX from previous years came standard with a nine-inch dual-display setup, but the screen is over 12 inches. Just like last year, it can be controlled with a touchpad. However, the all-digital gauge cluster is new for this year.

More standard features appear for this year, including wireless smartphone integration, a wireless charging pad, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The standard audio system now has an extra speaker and built-in navigation is included on most trims. The AcuraWatch safety suite returns for this year, as well as an innovative new kind of airbag.

An upgraded powertrain means more power

The most exciting new feature on the 2022 MDX is the MDX Type S, an all-new performance model. It’s powered by a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. It also comes paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission and SH-AWD, a performance-enhanced version of AWD.

The Acura MDX Type S’s performance specs are unknown, but Motor Trend anticipates that it might beat a 6-second 0-60 mph time. It also comes standard with Brembo brakes, 21-inch wheels, and quad exhaust tips. It has a few fancy interior add-ons like a premium audio system and massaging seats.

What stays the same on the Acura MDX?

While the ten-speed transmission is new, the standard 2022 Acura MDX has the same engine as it did in previous years. It’s a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with standard FWD. You can also add on SH-AWD or Precision All-Wheel steering at an additional cost.

Even though it’s not a performance model, the regular Acura MDX has confident handling and adequate acceleration. CNET anticipates that this new model will go on sale during the first quarter of this year for around $48,000.
