Acura announced its MDX prototype’s unveiling via a press release, and it signaled significant changes for the manufacturer’s flagship product.

The exterior of the 2022 Acura MDX has an all-new look. It displays a low, wide stance and a prominent long hood, establishing its athletic yet sophisticated aesthetic. Meanwhile, the SUV has a wheelbase three inches longer than its predecessor.

The redesigned MDX is based on a light-truck platform and features the nameplate’s first-ever double-wishbone front suspension. The vehicle’s standard 290-hp 3.5-liter V6 remains unchanged. However, Acura upgraded the MDX’s transmission from a nine-speed automatic to a 10-speed automatic.

Gearheads will be most captivated by the Type S model, which won’t reach dealer lots until Summer 2021. This performance-tuned model gives the MDX an all-new edge. Underneath the hood lies an exclusive 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, which kicks out an estimated 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. These are the most potent numbers ever delivered by an Acura-produced SUV. The Type S will also utilize a 10-speed automatic transmission, but it will only be offered with an all-wheel-drive system.

The interior gets the Midas touch

Drivers of luxury vehicles demand the best of the best in terms of quality materials. Acura is taking the next step to answer the bell with the newest additions inside the cabin of the 2022 Acura MDX.

The manufacturer’s press release noted how the three-row SUV’s interior is distinctly more sophisticated and cleaner than the previous model. It utilizes premium materials such as open-pore wood, polished aluminum, and Milano leather throughout the cabin.

As for new technologies, the 2022 Acura MDX will feature a 12.3-inch customizable driver’s meter that replaces physical knobs. The SUV also has a 12.3-inch infotainment display. Notably, this is not a touchscreen, and it will require users to navigate it via a touchpad.

Acura also upgraded its suite of driver-assistance technologies. It now includes traffic jam assist, road departure mitigation, and low-speed braking control.

The 2022 Acura MDX shows exceptional promise

The Acura MDX is a familiar model to luxury car shoppers, and its newest iteration is sure to pique the interest of many. The 2020 Acura MDX Type S introduces a level of performance never before achieved by the three-row SUV. This innovation aims to intrigue a new audience of drivers who otherwise may have looked toward buying rival SUVs, such as the BMW X5.

While the 2022 Acura MDX is flashy, its upgrades are not hollow. The performance boost, along with the added high-quality amenities, makes the MDX worth its luxury price.
