The Jeep Wrangler and the Other Best Off-Road Vehicles You Can Buy Used

Even though places like Moab, Utah are being cut off from the off-roading community, it’s a lifestyle that seems to be growing. Off-roading in Jeep models and similar vehicles is becoming more popular by the day, and everyone wants to learn about the dos and don’ts. There’s more to it than just driving into the woods and hoping for the best.

That’s why getting the right vehicle is important. A Dodge Hellcat is an impressive vehicle, but it wouldn’t do well off-road. That’s why many new off-roaders, and some more experienced who have earned their pinstripes, are looking for a used vehicle that can take the tough terrain like a pro. Thankfully, Carfax put together a list to help find the perfect used off-road vehicle that includes the legendary Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit

Jeep is usually the first brand to come to mind when people think of off-roading, and with good reason. Most Jeeps are built for the great outdoors. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is a vehicle that feels just as right on the city streets as it does crashing through rivers in the mountains, however.

The top Summit trim gives more options for off-roaders who want to tackle Mother Nature in all her forms. Whether it’s snow, rocks, mud, or snow, the Cherokee Summit can handle it with its many driving modes. Add in an adjustable-height suspension, and there are very few places your Cherokee Summit can’t go.

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

There’s a reason the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is one of the best used trucks on the market. It’s also the ideal truck for going off-roading. It comes with a powerful V8 engine that helps you speed across the desert while the competition is carefully crawling over obstacles. It was built for Baja-style off-road racing, after all.

Considering the F-150 is one of Ford’s top-selling vehicles, the American automaker really went all out on it. CarFax reports, “Off-road enhancements include an electronic 4×4 transfer case, modified front and rear differentials, and specific axle ratios.” The 2015 model has a problematic transmission, but most other model years have little to no problems.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Most off-roaders don’t immediately think of Mercedes Benz when they go to look for a vehicle that can climb mountains, but the G-Class was built with the outdoors in mind. Just one look at that tough exterior will quill most doubters. A test drive will be more than enough to convince everyone else.

The G-Wagon comes with a V8 engine that gives it an extra boost of power. According to CarFax, “The top G63 AMG version is able to run as fast as a sports car.” That might explain why celebrities like Kim Kardashian West are crazy about it.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD

Very few vehicles develop a cult following like the Toyota Tacoma TRD. In fact, it beat out the Jeep Gladiator for the title of Best Off-Road Truck. Many of its owners even refer to it as the Taco, and add pics of their Tacoma to social media in honor of ‘Taco Tuesday.’ It’s no surprise that many of these owners are off-roaders.

The TRD trim package really takes the already impressive Tacoma to the next level by adding in more options. It comes with an available 4WD V6 engine. The electronic-locking wheel differential can make all the difference to prevent the wheel from slipping. Off-roaders will also be grateful for features like the BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires, Bilstein shock absorbers, and the 28-millimeter front stabilizer bar.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon tends to take a lot of heat for the fact that it’s not that great on the streets, but it’s no secret that it was designed to face off with Mother Nature, not take a leisurely stroll past City Hall. For off-roaders, the Wrangler is the most well known, and highly respected off-roader around.

Whether it’s the fact that it comes with a 2- and 4-door version, or the fact that it has the tallest ride height, there’s something about a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that everyone respects. The removable tops are also a great option that very few other off-roaders offer. Besides, buying a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is like buying a small piece of history. For those who want to experience the great outdoors in its untamed version, the Wrangler Rubicon reigns supreme.
