At the time it was new, the 2020 Dodge Journey represented one of the cheapest three-row SUVs for sale. But this cheap price came at a cost. Not only was all-wheel drive not available, but by its final year, Dodge had eliminated the available V6 engine. Leaving only the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. That said, with a highly configurable interior and competent infotainment system, a used Dodge Journey may be on your radar. But you should skip the 2020 model year.

The 2020 Dodge Journey comes up short

The 2020 Journey comes up short in several categories. The only available powertrain was a 172 horsepower engine and AWD was not an option. This limits the Journey to front-wheel drive only. Also notable is the lack of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Both features were offered by many SUVs at the time.

Additionally, the 2020 Dodge Journey did not come backed by complimentary scheduled maintenance but buyers were able to enjoy a powertrain warranty that covered five years or 60,000 miles. Whichever came first.

What should you buy instead of a 2020 Dodge Journey?

There are several used SUVs worth considering over the Dodge Journey. These SUVs come with more features and capabilities. One SUV that can compete with the Journey is the Kia Sportage. This vehicle does feature AWD and feels more modern with its exterior and interior design. It does offer less cargo space than the Journey, but its engine produces more power and torque. More safety features could also be equipped to the Sportage.

Another SUV that is worth comparing is the Honda CR-V. Although the CR-V can only seat five passengers, according to MotorTrend, the third row of the Journey is not the most comfortable place to be. And, much like the Sportage, the CR-V will offer more comfort features depending on trim level.

The Nissan Pathfinder is also an SUV that goes up against the Dodge Journey. The Pathfinder delivers on more power and has enough room for up to eight passengers. Unlike the Journey, the Pathfinder also brings more features to the table. Which allows for added configurable options.

Does Dodge offer a three-row SUV worth buying?

Although the Journey is no more, Dodge still builds a new three-row SUV that is worth buying. The 2022 Dodge Durango is a vehicle ready to fulfill a variety of automotive roles. There is even a performance version boasting a 6.4-liter V8 engine which makes 475 hp and 470 pound-foot of torque.

Better yet, this SUV has the ability to tow up to 8,700 pounds. The drawback, of course, is the price. A Durango is going to cost more than a used Journey. But you will not have to sacrifice power, safety, and other modern features. Which is sure to be appreciated by SUV buyers. That said, if you are shopping for a three-row SUV on a budget, the Journey can get the job done. It just may not be an enjoyable driving experience.
