Sometimes, unexpected options can prove to be the best investments. This is the case with the 2022 Ram ProMaster City, a passenger van that offers surprising efficiency and comfort. While Ram killed the ProMaster City after the 2022 model year, as a used car, it’s a great investment. In fact, for many shoppers, the 2022 Ram ProMaster City might be an even better choice than minivans like the Toyota Sienna.

The 2022 Ram ProMaster City passenger wagon

A shining example of an efficient van that will always get the job done, the 2022 Ram ProMaster City passenger wagon might not come with a lot of bells and whistles. Still, for those who want something that will get them from Point A to Point B relatively quickly, it’s a great option. According to Car and Driver, this model has two distinct trims: a cargo van designed for work and a passenger van for those with families, friends, or carpooling coworkers. The cargo van has long been a top option for those who want a reliable work vehicle, but the passenger van is also an undercover hit.

Features in the ProMaster City include rear parking sensors, daytime running lights, body-colored front bumpers, manual adjustments for height and lumbar for the driver, and cruise control. It offers fuel economy of up to 21/28 mpg city/highway, ample room for road essentials, and a four-speaker sound system, including Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. As for pricing, the 2022 Ram ProMaster City has a starting MSRP of $34,080.

A look at the 2023 Toyota Sienna

The 2023 Toyota Sienna is slightly more expensive than the 2022 Ram ProMaster City, with a starting MSRP of $36,885. Due to its standard hybrid powertrain, it has impressive fuel economy, with 36 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, with all-wheel drive examples carrying ratings 1 mpg lower at 35 mpg. It’s also equipped with a slew of great features, including a JBL stereo system, wireless smartphone charging pad, heated and ventilated front seats, a 9.0-inch touchscreen display, and standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. Undoubtedly, the Toyota Sienna offers up a fancier interior than the ProMaster City passenger wagon, which might appeal to those who spend a lot of time in the car.

The Toyota Sienna also offers excellent safety features, including standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and standard adaptive cruise control. Another perk to the Toyota Sienna – it comes with a complimentary two-year maintenance plan. As noted by Car and Driver, this makes up for the fairly basic warranty package, with a limited warranty that covers three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Should buyers choose the Ram ProMaster City or the Toyota Sienna?

One significant advantage of the Toyota Sienna over the Ram ProMaster City is the available driver-assist features. The ProMaster City is notoriously light on these options, with a standard backup camera and rear parking sensors being the only notable driver-assist features. It also doesn’t offer blind-spot monitoring or automated emergency braking.

The Toyota Sienna also has a more luxurious interior than the Ram ProMaster City, with all the plush touches that large families might want for their road trips. Still, regarding drivability and smoothness, the Sienna and the ProMaster City are nearly neck and neck. At the slightly lower price, it might well be worth considering the older ProMaster City over the newer vehicle.
