A lot of things get us excited in today’s world of cars, but nothing gets us more amped than new information from Tesla about its latest works-in-progress. Tesla’s upcoming pickup truck is one of its most anticipated projects, mostly because details about it have been kept pretty secretive so far.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s original timeline projected the pickup truck to be unveiled at the end of the summer. However, it has since been moved back to November. While we wait for the release, here’s what we do know.

Expect more cyberpunk in the Tesla truck

Tesla has only released one image of its upcoming truck, and we’re not even sure what the picture is. It could be the hood, with one long headlight, or it could be the tailgate. Or, for all we know, it could be a zoomed-in picture of a tiny element somewhere in the truck. Either way, it’s something we’ve never seen before and looks like it’s straight out of the future.

While current models of Tesla cars have more technologically advanced parts than other cars out there today, the cars have stayed pretty normal in appearance. With smoother lines and more glass than ever before, Teslas definitely more futuristic than anything else on the market, but the designs haven’t strayed too far from other luxury vehicles.

We certainly wouldn’t call any of them “cyberpunk.” So, why would Tesla go out on a limb with its pickup truck? Simply put, Musk has wanted to play around with that style for a while.

Joe Rogan got an update on the Tesla truck from Musk

One way to get information is to go straight to the source. Mock-ups of what the pickup truck could potentially look like have been circling the internet, with no details as to how accurate they actually are.

Comedian Joe Rogan sent some of those pictures to Musk, asking how close they are to the real thing, and Musk replied that the actual truck is “even more Blade Runner than that.”

As cool as that may sound, Musk has also admitted that the appearance might not appeal to everyone. While the style is something he’s very excited about and has wanted to do for a long time, he has stated that if people don’t seem interested in the look of the pickup truck, Tesla will consider making a more conventional style in the future.

While the style may be different than what we’re used to, Rogan said on his podcast that he thinks consumers will get behind it simply because it’s American-made.

What does “more Blade Runner” mean?

For fans of the Blade Runner franchise, few things in life would get more exciting than the prospect of getting to drive one of the film’s flying vehicles. Vehicles in the Blade Runner world can drive on the ground, hover, and fly. Known as spinners, these vehicles are iconic in the franchise and have a super futuristic look to them.

While we can’t expect Tesla’s pickup truck to be capable of flight (yet!), we can at least use Musk’s Blade Runner reference to predict that the truck will be unlike anything else on the road.

There’s a good chance it will have a smooth front end leads right up into the windshield, like many in the movies. We can expect a lot of glass, like other Teslas on the road, perhaps with a huge sunroof and continuing the company’s design trend of having 360-degree visibility.

It’s even possible we’ll get Falcon Wing doors, like the Model X, since a lot of the vehicles in Blade Runner have similar doors. Whatever it ends up looking like, we can’t wait for the unveiling in November.
