The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan provides many reasons to like this compact crossover SUV. It handles smoothly, gets decent fuel economy, and offers seating for seven, a rarity in its class. But one feature appeals specifically to music lovers, and it’s available only in the top-tier trim. The fully loaded 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim delivers a sound system that makes their playlists hit harder than ever.

Overview of the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trims

Every 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan has a 184-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on lower trims, but all-wheel drive is available. FWD models get an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

The 2023 Tiguan offers four trim levels. Starting prices are $26,950 for the base-model S, $30,580 for the SE, $33,310 for the SE R-Line Black, and $37,680 for the range-topping SEL R-Line.

Drivers get a higher level of control thanks to four distinct drive modes (Normal, Sport, Eco, and Individual) and electric power steering. Keyless entry is another standard feature.

In addition, the base model includes several advanced driver-assistance systems, such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. It also has a rearview camera, an anti-theft engine immobilizer, and an advanced airbag system with extra protection via the front, rear, and side curtains.

As for the interior, the Tiguan is one of the few small SUVs with a third row, seating seven. It has a maximum cargo space of 73.4 cubic feet in the two-row model and 65.3 cubic feet in the three-row variant.

The base model is stylized with automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, heated and foldable power side mirrors, heated water nozzles, black roof rails, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The SEL R-Line packs plenty into the 2023 Tiguan. This trim updates numerous existing systems and adds a few more useful features.

It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, has power-folding side mirrors, and boasts VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard equipment. (However, that addition removes the third-row seating option.) The SEL R-Line also includes more driver assists, such as parallel and perpendicular parking aids, automatic high-beam headlights, and a 360-degree camera.

Additionally, the interior is more luxurious thanks to leather upholstery and ventilated front seats. However, the infotainment system gets arguably the most significant upgrade: a Fender premium audio system that “delivers arena-sized sound.”

Volkswagen collaborated with Panasonic and Fender “to create the emotion of a live performance for all passengers.”

The system boasts a 480-watt, 12-channel amp and nine speakers. They include Super Twin front-door speakers and a Bassman subwoofer. “The Super Twin units are 200-mm dual voice-coil woofers … engineered for improved front-stage imaging and bass response, while the subwoofer, with a single voice-coil setup, ensures Fender’s signature audio experience is enjoyable across all rows,” Volkswagen says.

VW starts the SEL R-Line at $37,680, but the price rises with optional packages and accessories. The most expensive add-ons are the $735 Urban Loader and Cargo Box Attachment and a $400 roof basket.

With all the options and the $1,295 destination charge added, a fully loaded 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line costs $44,433.

Which trim provides the best value?

The base-model Tiguan S has an extensive set of features, but the two mid-range trims provide better value for the money.

The SE has an attractive combination of capability, premium feel, and reasonable price. And for a couple of thousand dollars more, the SE R-Line Black is appealing if you value the extra cargo space over the third row of seats.

Despite its appealing Fender sound system, the fully loaded 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim is over $10,000 more than the base model. So it might not provide the value most consumers want.

Overall, your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences play a significant role in which trim will best fit your needs and desire. The 2023 Tiguan is a solid SUV regardless of which trim you choose.
