The Toyota C-HR is being discontinued. Toyota has not made a 2023 Toyota C-HR, but plenty of 2022 models are still floating around. Here’s why you should avoid getting a C-HR as the subcompact SUV breathes its final breath.

The Toyota C-HR couldn’t cut the mustard

Toyota produces some of the most notable SUV nameplates on the market. Models like the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Highlander have put the brand on the map. SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner are known for being capable and long-lasting. The brand has a competitive model in every segment, but the C-HR wasn’t doing it any favors.

The Toyota C-HR wasn’t well-received by consumers or critics. Drivers found the subcompact SUV impractical, especially compared to other Toyota nameplates. It was also too expensive for the value it offered. Toyota SUVs typically have attractive value propositions, so the C-HR sticks out like a sore thumb in its lineup.

Is the Toyota C-HR a good SUV?

The 2022 Toyota C-HR is the final C-HR model released in the United States. It starts at $24,280. The C-HR comes in three trim levels. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to make 144 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The C-HR gets 27 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

Compared to the best subcompact SUVs, the C-HR isn’t remarkably affordable, powerful, or efficient. It’s entirely outclassed by the 2023 Mazda CX-30, 2023 Hyundai Kona, and 2023 Kia Soul.

Some consumers may enjoy the C-HR, but there isn’t enough demand for Toyota to justify keeping the nameplate around. So, Toyota’s subcompact SUV is headed for the great junkyard in the sky but never fear. Another Toyota subcompact SUV has already replaced it.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is an excellent C-HR replacement

The Toyota Corolla Cross is a new subcompact SUV from the Japanese automaker closely related to the popular Toyota Corolla small car nameplate. The Corolla nameplate is synonymous with value. Toyota Corollas outlast rivals, have affordable starting prices, and come with great standard features.

The Toyota Corolla Cross is an excellent choice for drivers that enjoy the Corolla but need more cabin and cargo space. The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross starts at $23,060. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to make 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The Corolla Cross gets 31 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. It’s available in three different trims and has an all-wheel drive option.

Car and Driver recommends the Corolla Cross XLE because of standard features like front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and blind-spot monitoring. A hybrid version of the Corolla Cross is coming as well. It’s expected to be more powerful and efficient. Toyota is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the subcompact SUV vehicle segment. It might even have a shot at the best subcompact SUV title in a few years.
