It seems the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has a new competitor on the market in form of Nissan’s mid-size truck. The 2022 Frontier is now the second-best-selling mid-size truck on the market, although it has not quite caught up to the Tacoma in terms of sales. Still, it makes sense that buyers are seriously considering the Frontier over the Tacoma, especially considering that the Frontier is the newer truck. But, the 2022 Tacoma still beats it in one key area, having a manual transmission.

How does the 2022 Toyota Tacoma beat the Nissan Frontier?

While in the past the Nissan Frontier has offered a manual transmission, that is no longer the case, but the Toyota Tacoma still does. On trims such as the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro, buyers can get the benefits of hand-made shifts. And that is something that mid-size truck owners are likely to appreciate.

That’s right, in 2022 Toyota is still selling a mid-size truck with an available manual transmission. In the auto industry, that is quickly becoming a rarity. Although daily driving a manual vehicle is not for everyone, if you are someone interested in off-roading, it may be right for you. Standard transmissions give you more control over your vehicle. And they provide a more engaging drive.

Can you buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma with a manual transmission?

The answer to that is complicated, unfortunately not every new Tacoma is available with a manual transmission. In order to get the six-speed manual, you will have to opt for one of the TRD models with the available 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The V6 engine makes 278 horsepower and 265 pound-foot of torque, which is a fairly impressive number. Granted it is less power than is offered to the 2022 Nissan Frontier. Additionally, the manual transmission can be had with either rear or four-wheel drive. Which will allow you to get the right amount of truck for your specific needs.

Is the Tacoma still a good truck?

The Tacoma has long been a sought-after truck, and that continues to this day. Although The Drive has noted that sales of the Taco are down about 20% year-over-year. Even so, the Tacoma remains one of the most popular mid-size trucks in the United States.

As a mid-size pickup, it is competent at handling a variety of roles. Whether you are looking for an off-road truck with 4×4 features, or you just enjoy the experience of driving a pickup, the 2022 Tacoma is ready to tackle it.

Perhaps the biggest downfall of the new Toyota Tacoma is its price tag. If you want the ultimate off-roader, you will want the Tacoma TRD Pro. But, this truck starts at $46,585, which is well into full-size truck territory. In terms of the Frontier’s off-road package, it is much cheaper. That said, the Tacoma TRD Pro brings a lot to the table, including an available manual transmission. And to some, that may be worth it, because you can’t get a standard transmission on the new Nissan Frontier.
